Evil Running Shoes

Gross, huh? I suppose it's time for some new running shoes. I've had these blisters for a few weeks and they aren't getting any better. Now the question is, do I try to find a new running store in Albuquerque this weekend? Or do I wait it out until I can get to my favorite store in Denver next month?

Jenna's Fancy Birthday

One thing you should know about Jenna is that she is complete girl. If it sparkles, dances or looks fancy, it is for her. One of her favorite books is Fancy Nancy. It is about a girl who chooses everything fancy over plain and tries to teach her family how to be fancy. We decided to have a fancy themed birthday party for Jenna's sixth birthday.

All of her guests came dressed in fancy clothes.

I wish I would've gotten a picture of our family, but we were all dressed fancy, too. David found a paisley cumberbund and bowtie at the thrift store for $2 and I was wearing Jenna's feather boa and headband. Paige and Jack were fancy, too.

We started out by making tiaras out of sparkly pipecleaners. Jenna appears to be getting crowned in this picture and loving it.

For a fancy cake, I made marshamallow fondant for the first time. I thought it turned out great! It actually tasted pretty good, too.

Happy Birthday, Jenny! We love you!

It takes an hour...

of rocking, walking and crying in her bed to get London down for a nap and then she wakes up fifteen minutes later. Something is wrong with this.

5 Months Old

And up to new tricks. London has really figured out her hands and what to do with them. She will grab anything that comes within an arm's reach and it goes automatically to her mouth. As I was trying to take a picture of her, the camera strap was dangling and she was like a cat batting at a string!

My favorite thing is how she plays peek-a-boo! She will grab the blanket with two hands and pull it up over her face. Then she yanks it down and laughs her head off. I am going to try to get a video of her doing it tomorrow. I'm not kidding, it is dang cute.

I don't have any weight stats since she hasn't been to the doctor since her four month check up. Let's just say that she's still tiny, even though she looks chubby in the pictures. I guess the camera adds ten pounds, right?

The Story of A Purse

Once upon a time, there was a lady with an adorable baby girl. This baby girl had the tiniest feet in all the land and even though she was five months old, the newborn sized shoes were all too big for her. Her mother, being the crafty sort, went on a quest to find the most beautiful piece of leather that she could to make her darling daughter a pair of shoes. She stopped at a peddler on the side of the road and inquired about a purse. Oh what a find! It was genuine leather and only fifty pieces of silver!

She promptly put the baby to bed so that she could work. With sissors flying and needles sewing, the hideously ugly purse became the most adorable and tiny shoes!

The pattern is available here.

Jenna's First Day of Kindergarten

I'm kind of sad and Jack is moping around with no one to play with. He misses his buddy. She was excited this morning, though, and was up at the crack of dawn.

Marsh School has a staggered start for preschool, kindergarten and first grade, so only a third of the kids go on each of the first three days. Today was her day and then all the kids will be there tomorrow on out. She has Mrs. Heersink for a teacher and so far, one of her friends from preschool is in her class.

She seems like such a big girl, but looking at this picture, she still is so little! How can she be big enough to be gone to school all day, everyday?

Of course her hairdo was a big hit with all the teachers as I was filling out all the required paperwork.

Paige's First Day of 4th Grade

On August 24th. Seriously? And how can she be that old? We have never started school this early before and I'm not quite ready for it. Paige wasn't quite ready for it either. Notice her cut off shorts. Now notice her shoes. She has been dying for a pair of those and bought them with her own money. The Nike shoes that I bought her are probably still in the box in her closet.

Now notice the fancy concrete porch that she is standing on. Yes, that is indeed my front door and we do indeed have a porch! We also have half of a driveway and it, along with the back porch, will be done in the next week or so. I can't wait to park in the garage again!

Paige's teacher is Mrs. Treinen, who I remember from Girls Camp when I was in Young Women. I don't know if any of her friends are in her class, but I suppose she'll make friends with whoever is there.

Banana Muffins

I signed up to take a dessert to our ward campout potluck tonight. I made over this banana muffin recipe to be a lot more healthy.

I used applesauce instead of butter and added flaxseed for some fiber. I added an extra banana because I had it and reduced the sugar since the bananas are so sweet anyway. I should have used whole wheat flour, but I didn't think about it until just now! That is definitely a better option and I don't think it would change the texture or taste in this recipe.

With all these changes, I'm not even going to consider it a treat! Now I'll just need the willpower to avoid the other desserts...

Banana Muffins
1 1/2 c. flour
1 t. baking powder
1 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt
4 bananas
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce
1 egg
2 T. milled flax seed

Preheat oven to 325 for dark pans or 350 for shiny pans. Spray with cooking spray or use muffin liners.

Combine flour, baking soda, powder and salt in a small bowl. Set aside.

Mash bananas in a large mixing bowl. Add sugar, applesauce, egg and flaxseed and combine. Add flour mixture all at once and fold until combined. Don't mix too much.

Fill muffin cups about half full. I got 20 muffins this way. Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden.

Four Months Old

Can you believe it? Pregnancy seems like it will never end, and then before you know it, your baby is doing all kinds of new tricks.

London's most favorite thing to do is chew on her feet. She is so cute and I love her so much.

We haven't started any cereal yet with her. The girls were both four months when I started them on solids, but Jack refused until he was about six months. It just seems like one more thing for me to worry about at this point.

Here are her stats:

Weight: 11 lbs, 4.5 oz
Length: 23.25"

And since I never posted her two month stats, let's compare:

Weight: 9 lbs, 2 oz
Length: 22"

Yay! She's growing! It helps that she all of a sudden decided to eat. That was a big relief. I don't know what clicked, but something did. Maybe she got sick of seeing doctors and having scopes shoved down her throat and decided to do something about it. Whatever it was, I'm glad.

Fit By Fall

I am joining a weight loss group that is similar to The Biggest Loser, and it starts today! I still have at least ten pounds to lose of pregnancy weight, so I am hoping this will motivate me to lose it. My friend, Becky, who is actually an internet friend, started the contest. The rest of my group lives around Salt Lake City, so I'll never meet them.

Here are the rules:

The Daily Jenna

I just caught the tail end of an argument between Jenna and Jack. Who knows what they were even arguing about?!

Jenna: Yes, it is!

Jack: No, it isn't!

Jenna: (With sass) Jack, you're not the smartest guy in town!

Texas Part Two

One of the most fun things that the kids got to do was go tubing and skiing on Justin and Emma's boat. They got it last year and are putting it to great use! I stayed home with London because I didn't want to take her out in the heat if I didn't have to.

This first one is of Paige skiing. Doesn't she look great?! The videography stinks (sorry David, but it does) and I couldn't figure out how to edit it in the program that came on our computer, so this is what you get. It showed her in the sun and close up, though, so that's why I used it.

Jenna and Jack had fun on the boat, but apparently, Jenna was not too keen on getting on the tube. She would rather be the driver.

Jack was willing to ride the tube. He liked it, from what I heard. And there are a couple of things that crack me up about this picture. First of all, remember how Jenna is always striking a pose for the picture? Well, now we see that she gets it from her Aunt Karen. Secondly, now you see David...

Now you don't. Or you see an airborn David. That is so like him!

Texas Part One

We left for our trip on Friday, July 3rd. We drove all the way to Marlow, OK where Aunt Sherril and a bunch of David's family live. We stayed with his cousin Robin and her husband, Roy. Marlow is a small town very similar to Monte Vista, but it has a great fireworks show, which is what takes us there most years. This year, however, there was a giant rainstorm about two hours before the show was supposed to start, so they cancelled it. That was pretty disappointing, but they rescheduled it for the next night. We were anxious to get to Texas, so we left anyway the next morning and went to stay at Cameron and Karen's.

Cam's parents had just left to be the president of Budapest, Hungary mission, so Cam and Karen moved into his parents' house and put theirs up for rent. It is a very nice and large house, so John and Marsha (Grandpa and Grandma) were able to stay there as well and we had tons of room to spread out. The kids' favorite thing was the pool, which they spent plenty of time in! It was also fun to get to play with Dylan. He has such a cute little personality and it was fun to spend time with him.

Here is Paige, Braxten, who is Emma's step-son, Jenna and Jack. David took this from the second floor balcony. Paige is like a fish in the water and is a pretty good swimmer. She and Braxten are only a couple weeks apart in age and get along swimmingly. (hehe) Jenna is a lot more afraid of the water and refuses to put he nose in. Notice the two sets of arm floaties. And she is always one to strike a pose when she is getting her picture taken. Jack started out a lot like Jenna, but by the end of the week, he was jumping in and trying to swim underwater.

Days 10-13

Day 10: I co-washed twice today, once in the morning and once after swimmming, and my hair felt pretty clean. I even wore it down. I got some coconut oil but I think I used too much. It pretty much came out between swimming and the second co-wash.

Day 11: I didn't wash at all since I didn't go swimming and had just co-washed it the night before. Then we left for Amarillo and spent the rest of the day in the car. I did stop by Sally's to find some cone-free gel, but I couldn't find one single bottle of the stuff. I also got a boar bristle brush there, which is supposed to help distribute your natural oils throughout your hair.

Day 12: Another co-wash and then a drive home. I let it air dry in the car so I didn't get to blow dry it or straighten it. Talk about frizzy.

Day 13: I am going to do a bs/lj wash today and I think I might add some honey to the bs. I read somewhere that honey helps to combat the frizziness. I also found some cone-free gel in my cupboard, which makes me glad I didn't spend $10 on it at Sally's! This is White Rain brand, if anyone is curious. So I'm going to use that today and see if my hair won't curl on its own.

No Pooing and Vacation

We're in Texas this week and are having a great time. We are staying with Karen and have been swimming everyday, done lots of shopping, and even boating. I'll have more updates on that when we get home and I can post pictures. For now, I'll just update on my No Poo experiment.

Day 2: I didn't work out, so I didn't shower at all. My hair felt like a normal, non-washing day.

Day 3: I did another baking soda/lemon juice (bs/lj) wash before we left for Texas. This time, I used the cone-free conditioner. Hair was soft and still frizzy since I didn't have time to straighten it before we left.

Day 4: We were in Oklahoma for the 4th and it was stinking hot. I did a co-wash and my hair was feeling oily. It was definitely in a ponytail.

Day 5: I did another co-wash and was still feeling oily. It was really weighted down, too.

Day 6: Today I used baking soda without the lemon juice and then conditioner. It is far less oily and decently soft.

Day 7: I went for a run in the Texas heat and humidity, which equals a lot of sweat. I just co-washed and it felt almost back to normal.

Day 8: Another co-wash day and still feeling good.

Day 9: I did another bs/conditioner wash and I think I could've left it down if it wasn't so blasted hot here. It is still frizzy when it dries, but I am planning on getting some cone-free gel and coconut oil to combat some of that. I just need to get to Sally's and Vitamin Shoppe, which I think I can do tomorrow.

The No Poo Experiment

Shampoo, that is. I've been reading a bunch of stuff about never using shampoo and am ready to take the leap. If I let my hair air dry, it immediately frizzes and is not really wavy but not really straight, either. I'm curious to see if this method will cause it to lose the frizz and actually wave or even curl. Basically, the concept is that shampoo strips your hair of its natural oil, causing it to over produce to compensate, which is why most of us shampoo everyday or every other day. Then, most conditioners contain some kind of silicone, or "cones", which coat your hair and give it a fake shine and softness. By cutting them out and allowing your scalp to regulate the oil production, you end up with healthy, shiny, silky hair. We'll see.

Now just because I'm not using shampoo, it doesn't mean that I'm not washing my hair. I started this morning using a baking soda and lemon juice wash. I'm not sure why the baking soda is safe, meaning it doesn't strip your hair, but apparently, it doesn't. So that should've gotten rid of all the build up from the cones. I just mixed about a teaspoon of baking soda in a cup with water and dumped it on my hair. Then I massaged it all around and scrubbed my scalp good. After rinsing that out, I poured a bit of lemon juice in the cup and added water. I did the same thing with that. Some people use apple cider vinegar, but since I hate the smell of vinegar and didn't want to keep getting whiffs of it throughout the day, I thought lemon juice would be my best choice. Now if I would've remembered to get some cone-free conditioner yesterday, I would've used that last.

My results for today? It was a little more tangled than normal while combing it out, but I think the conditioner would've helped that. Overall, it doesn't feel much different than it did yesterday when I used the cone shampoo and conditioner and I'm getting that frizz as it air dries. That was pretty much to be expected. I was a little nervous about not shampooing since I ran this morning and got pretty sweaty, but it feels clean.

I won't be doing the baking soda wash everyday, mostly just when I feel like it needs an extra cleaning. Tomorrow, I'll just use the cone-free conditioner to wash with (co-wash). Some people experience a transition period where their hair is adjusting the oil level needed, so I'm hoping that doesn't happen to me! My timing isn't great since we are going to Texas on Friday, but I couldn't wait to get started and see how my hair responds. I may be sporting a lot of pony tails until it gets itself worked out.

In other news, London had a endoscopy done, where they stuck a camera down her throat and all the way into her intestines, and it all looked normal. She also had an upper GI, where she swallows some barium and they watch it go down on an x-ray, and everything looked normal there, too. There is one more swallowing test that we can do, but I don't think I want to subject her to more tests. She is gaining weight and growing, so I'm crossing my fingers that she'll just outgrow it. I have also been taking her to the chiropractor to get adjusted. He told me something to the effect that the are a whole bunch of nerves at the base of the skull that have to do with swallowing and spit-up, so he's been working there. She wanted to eat almost every hour and a half yesterday, so maybe something is working.

The Sweetest Sound

Unwanted Neighbors

We have been finding a ton of Yellow Jacket wasps in the house this year. I've probably killed six or eight on the last month. It looks like they are planning on staying! Paige spotted this right above my front door.

Admit One

London has decided that she hates eating again. I called Dr. Neigut on Fraiday afternoon to see what she thought and she decided to admit her that night to observe her and get the tests done. I was in Wal-Mart grocery shopping during all of those conversations, so I finished up and went home to pack. Mom came and got the other kids and we left at about 6pm to go to Denver. We got there at about 10:30 and got checked in pretty quickly. Nothing happened that night except basically getting situated. We had to weigh her diapers and write down how her feedings went. The biggest concern was that she was getting dehydrated. And as it turns out, nothing happens on the weekends with getting tests done. So after spending most of Saturday just waiting around , they decided that she wasn't dehydrated and was okay to be discharged.

They suggested that we stay in the Ronald McDonald house until Monday to get the tests done, but we decided to go home and come back when we actually need to. Now I am just waiting for a call back to see when we need to go. I will be taking London and David will stay here with the kids at night and we'll have to find someone to keep them during the day. She will be having the swallowing study, the upper GI and a scope of her throat done. It breaks my heart to think of what she is going to have to go through, but we need to get to the bottom of this.

The Daily Paige

I teach a fitness class at the gym called SilverSneakers and it is for senior citizens. I think the average age of the particpants is probably 73. The kids go with me and watch tv but usually hang out in the studio while I set up and the ladies love them. There were probably a dozen ladies in class today.

So here's today's amusing bit, from after the class was over and we were going home:

Paige: Mom, who was that old lady with the short, grayish-silverish hair?

London's Eating Disorder

I suppose you could call it that. She was such a great eater at birth, I don't know what happened. It all started at about three weeks or so. She got really fussy when I would try to nurse her and would refuse to eat. Sometimes she would do just fine, sometimes she would start to eat and then start screaming and be done, and sometimes she would just flat out refuse. I took her to see the doctor and she didn't know what to do for her and we tried some Zantac, thinking it might be reflux. That didn't help. I tried gripe water and that didn't help either.

A couple of weeks ago, I took her back to the doctor for her two month check up and she was just crazy. It had been about five hours since she had eaten, but still refused to eat, and she was just inconsoleable. He sent me to the ER at Alamosa to get checked out and she had an x-ray done to see if everything was in its proper place and everything looked fine there. I had gotten her to eat just before that, though, so she was a lot more calm then. She is gaining weight slowly, so that at least was good.

After about two months of this, I was kind of at my wit's end. Something is wrong with her and we need to figure it out. Dr. Franco made a referral up to the GI department at Children's Hospital at Denver. I also decided to take her to see Jan Mortensen, aka the witch doctor, to see if there were any essential oils that could help her. She did kind of an adjustment on her and said that her neck was out of whack and that her stomach was up under her ribs. She also said that she probably had strep and that it was likely her throat hurting that was causing her so much trouble. I have been putting tea tree oil on her feet to help with that and she is doing better. She still wasn't 100% better, though, so we still took her to the GI appointment in Denver.

Her appointement was on Monday, yesterday, so we went up on Sunday and stayed with Alyson and Kirk. The doctor, Deborah Neigut, thought it was probably either reflux or a swallowing problem. She wrote her a prescription for prevacid and told us to try it for a week and see if there is any improvement. We are also going to make an appointment for a swallowing study to see if there are any issues there. Which reminds me, I need to make the call to get that done. Apparently, it takes about a month to get an appointment, so we'll see if the prevacid works while we are waiting for that.

David went to the chiropractor today and told him about London's problems. He told David that he has had a lot of success helping infants with reflux by adjusting them. I made her an appointment at the beginning of May and the soonest one I could get was June 24th! So we'll see if that helps, but I'm not waiting to start the meds until then, like he also suggested to David. If he could see her today, then sure.

The Daily Paige

The kids all wanted to sleep together in the girls' room and I was asleep in my bed. Enter Paige at about 7am.

Paige: Mom, Jack is talking to his dumb panda and won't let Jenna and me sleep.

Me: Paige, you just did to me exactly what you are complaining about.

Paige: Oh.

Updates

Here is the super long post where you get updated on just about everything that has happened in the last month.

First of all, London had her baby blessing at church on the 3rd. She was just beautiful in her long white gown. I wish I would've gotten a family picture, but Sundays are always crazy. David had a meeting before hand so he left before we were all ready and I was running Primary that day with no couselors or secretary, so by the time I got home, I was exhausted!

David's family all came from Texas and we had a great time with them. David and his brother-in-law, Justin, spent plenty of time riding their motorcycles up in the mountains. I know he was glad to have someone to ride with.

Jenna has been taking ballet classes all year and had her first recital. She was in the Rose dance and did a great job! There is nothing like watching a bunch of four and five year olds dance. I tried to video it, but apparently, I am inept and didn't actually push the right button on my new camera. I am still kicking myself for it.

Paige has been taking guitar lessons and had her first recital on the 17th. She did great!

Seven Weeks Old

I have a bunch of stuff to update you on, but I'm going to go out of order here. I went a little camera happy today and took a million snap shots of London. She's seven weeks old! Here's the first in the series.

Easter

I love springtime in the Valley. And I hope you know that I'm kidding. We were punished for having a mild winter by getting a snowstorm on Easter.

Somehow we managed to not get any pictures of the kids dressed up for church, but we got some of the important stuff, aka the candy.

I Ran

I suppose I should use that term loosely since I did a lot more walking than I did running. Yesterday, I laced up my dusty running shoes and ran my old standby course. I started out going west down Sherman, turned east at Marvin's and went up the highway to the Coop road. Then I turned north and headed back to Sherman and then home for a total of 2.25 miles. It. Felt. So. Good. It was the fix that I have been craving for a long time. David had to go to Arizona today for work, so I won't be able to run outside again this week since he won't get home until Saturday. And don't get me started on that. I still have the pregnancy/post-partum emotional thing going on and can cry at the drop of a hat and do not appreciate that he was sent away from me while I have a newborn and three other kids to care for. Anyhoo, for tomorrow, I have a date with the dreadmill.

Six Days Old

London had her very first check up today. The nurses at the hospital made the appointment and handed me the reminder card. I knew it was today, but I couldn't remember what time it was at. It was about 8:15 when I checked the card and the appointment was at 8:30! Who gives a newborn an appointment that early in the morning?! Luckily, I had already been up and showered but London was still asleep and was due to eat anytime. She was not happy about not getting to eat right away! She is still so tiny and only weighs 6 lbs, 6 oz.

London's Birth Story

When I think about actually giving birth, pleasant thoughts do not immediately come to mind. Thanks to the wonderful invention of the epidural, I can honestly say this was probably the best birthing experience possible. It was literally painfree, all except for the feet kicking my ribs up until the very end.

We took the kids to Mom's on Saturday night and then headed to the hospital. We got there at about 7:00 and they were ready for us. Luckily, it was a slow night and we were able to get started right away. At least they tried. It took four tries to get my IV in and another poke to draw my labs. My arms look like they belong to a heroine user. They also hooked me up to the monitor that would track baby's heartrate and my contractions. It turned out that I was already contracting about every five minutes anyway and dialated to a three! My nurse, Andrea, was excited to start pitocin and have a baby that night! Dr. Gaunt apparently wanted to go home and sleep, though, so he told her to give me a cervix softening pill and wait until morning to start the pit. I was pretty disappointed, but I got a sleeping pill and slept pretty well. They even brought in a cot for David to sleep on, which is an improvement to the chair that normally is in the room. David had brought the Wii so we played games for a while, which was a nice distraction.

Andrea started the pit at about 5:30 before her shift ended and we were on the way! I was feeling the contractions, but they weren't painful yet, so I decided to get the epidural before they got that way. It worked like a charm and I was able to sleep on and off throughout the day. I averaged about a centimeter an hour, which isn't super fast, but I guess it could've been worse. Baby's head was still way up high, so Dr. Gaunt didn't want to break my water because he said if she's still floating, the cord or an arm could come down with the gush. The day nurse, Theresa, came in to check me and my water broke then anyway! So I was at about a seven and we hoped things would go faster from there. I was finally competely dialated by about 1:20 and they got everything set up for delivery. They broke down the bed and it was time to go! I could feel the contractions but still no pain. She came down really quickly and it only took about 10 minutes of pushing and she was born! It didn't hurt! I love epidurals! David confirmed to me that she was still the girl that we were expecting and he cut the cord. They took her over to the warmer right away to get her cleaned up and weighed. She weighed 6 lbs, 14 oz and was 19 inches long and born at 1:38 pm. She has a little bit of hair and it looks kind of reddish.

We had kind of decided on the name London a bit before but we didn't have a middle name yet. David suggested Marie and we thought it sounded good so we went with it.

I felt great afterward and didn't have any tearing at all. Dr. Gaunt is an awesome doctor and was able to do some massaging, stretching thing that really made the difference, I think. I had episiotomies with both Paige and Jenna, but didn't need one with either Jack or London, who were both delivered by Dr. Gaunt. London latched on right as soon as I was able to try to nurse her and is a good feeder still. What a good baby!

Mom brought the kids to see us that evening and the girls loved her right away. Jack was a little weirded out the by hospital and pretty much wanted to leave as soon as he got there. He didn't like seeing me in the bed with an IV in my hand and I couldn't get up because my legs were still numb.

I had Andrea for a nurse again that night and slept on and off. London went to the nursery and I told them to only bring her to me when she was wide awake and ready to nurse. That only ended up being one time. Everything was fine with both me and London, so we were able to leave at about 12:30 on Monday. It was so nice to be back in my own bed! I took a nap and slept better for that hour and a half than I did the whole time I spent in the hospital. David was so good to me the whole time and I really appreciate him. He is such a good daddy and the kids adore him. London recognized his voice immediately and I'm sure she'll be just as taken as the rest of them.
